Bill Rolls

I studied Contemporary Crafts at Hereford College specializing in ceramics for both my BA and MA degrees.

My latest body of work is inspired by volcanic colour’s and sediments, in the form of slips on thrown pieces decorated with handmade springs. Bill uses transparent glaze to fire in an electric kiln to enhance the finish potential on the pieces.

I'm a slipware potter predominately using mocha ware and coloured slips

Mocha ware is a sub-category of slipware, where you use a mixture called mocha, which traditionally was made from boiling chewing tobacco and placing on slip to create tree like spindles which cascade down the slip.

For me as an artist, I really enjoy exploring new ideas, new forms and a practical process that collate with the use of slipware. Throwing for me is a form of therapy in which I love the regimental process.
